Viqueria Maestrale

Viqueria Maestrale

Zelos Thresher 500m GMT Ad-Zaltek Reviews

Today sees Italian microbrand Viqueria announce their new watch. They’ve been teasing it over on their social media pages for the last few days – the photos made it obvious that it was going to be a diver’s watch to some degree, but what has been officially announced has turned out even better than expected!

Before I go into the new Maelstrale, and for those not familiar with Viqueria, a little about the brand. They’re an Italian brand who began in 2012 by Nicolo and Omar, now with two models under their belts. Their first, the Roma, was a dress watch. Their second and most recent, the Levante, was a racing-inspired chronograph and seemed to be very well received by those who backed it.

Back to the Maelstrale, it is thankfully not just another dive watch with an NH35 or Miyota 9015 movement in, lacking in design substance…as we unfortunately see all too often in the microbrand scene. Viqueria have incorporated a GMT movement from Soprod and made a serious-looking tool watch, whilst maintaining the brand’s design DNA. Looking at their press images, the Maestrale is very reminiscent of their Levante Chronograph despite being a totally different watch. Building a strong brand DNA is vital to the longevity of a brand (along with many other variables) but it is something that is all too often lost. Many brands try to be radically different with every release and please everyone and, in doing so, lose sight of what made them unique in the first place. Well done guys!

Viqueria Maelstrale

A GMT diver is not radical in itself, but the other design choices of the Maelstrale add up to a very nice overall package. The movement itself is the C125 from Swiss manufacturer, Soprod. That’s a well-respected and solid movement choice right there, and offers something different from the usual Swiss-made GMT suspects, the ETA 2893-2 or Sellita SW330-1. The 42mm case and the accompanying bracelet are made of titanium and feature a ceramic 24-hr bezel. A sapphire crystal completes the package.

Limited to 500pcs, the Maestrale will be launched on Kickstarter on Saturday, 14 March 2020 at 14.00 gmt.

All in all, this is shaping up to be a nice, solid watch and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it. We will be reaching out to Viqueria in due course to try and get a piece in for a hands-on review. Stay tuned!
